‘The Rise and Fall of Victorian Biography’ is a postgraduate conference being held at the University of Hull on 16th July 2014, aimed at promoting Northern research in Victorian studies and life-writing. The conference will encompass a range of themes relating to the topic of life-writing, exploring the development of Victorian biography and the influence of biography on the Victorians: papers range from new readings of the autobiographical writings of Wordsworth to the development of lesbian biomythography at the turn of the century – via Mary Elizabeth Braddon, Jane Austen in China and the development of spiritualist autobiography – culminating in a keynote by Dr Trev Broughton (University of York) on ‘Saving Lives: A Victorian Biographer at Mid-Century’.
